Bristol City Sacks Manager Gary Johnson

English League Championship, Misc

Despite having taken Bristol City up from League One and then just 90 minutes from the English Premier League, Gary Johnson on Thursday found himself sacked from the job. While the method was not revealed, it was clearly the club asking the manager to leave. It would not be badly timed either if the club is seeking a change to shake things up for next season, after a bitterly disappointing season. Bristol City chairman stated:

“I would like to place on record my thanks to Gary for the fantastic work he has done over four-and-a-half years at the club,” City chairman Steve Lansdown told his club’s official website.
“Winning promotion from League One and reaching the Championship play-off final will always live long in the memory for myself and I’m sure for our supporters as well.

“Results haven’t gone as well as everyone would have liked this season and it’s been mutually agreed that now is the right time to make a change.”

This season might have been disappointing in the end, but Bristol City did look possible candidates for the playoffs at some point. The club might feel that the manager had gone stale with his team and that a change at the top was necessary for progress. How this will develop next season can only been seen when the time comes. For now, it is a new era and Gary Johnson harboured no ill feelings as he bade the club farewell with some final words:

“I’d like to thank the chairman for his continual support throughout the last four-and-a-half years and congratulate him on taking the club to the level it currently enjoys,” he said.

“I thank the majority of the club’s fans for their tremendous support during my time with the club.
“I thank the players and staff for their continued efforts in getting this club from what was a position at the bottom of League One when I joined, to promotion to the Championship, to the play-off final for a place in the Premier League and then to compete in the Championship thereafter.

“I leave Bristol City FC with fond memories but feel the time is right to move on to a new challenge.”

Assistant manager Keith Millen has been put in charge of the team for the moment until a replacement can be appointed. Millen will be in the dugout for this weekend’s match against Championship leaders Newcastle United.
